The economy of knowledge improves the quality of living

Abstract

The knowledge society essentially changes the lives of people to the best: the value of public good becomes more evident. Though with appearance of new possibilities the competition becomes more global and challenging, there also appear new opportunities for social and personal choice. In the course of the development of the new society the interaction between generations changes but it is still important that all generations could use different technologies and work together. ICTs introduced a lot of new things to the life of the society: the appearance of social media, open government, open data, etc. are important. Thanks to active use of new technologies governments have become more aware of citizens’ needs. But government’s openness does not abolish the problems of national security, and the government must hold a strong position towards its sustenance.

People Innovation Capability Maturity Model (PICaMM) for Measuring SMMEs in South Africa

Abstract: The South African Government has recognised the potential of the contribution of Small Medium Micro Enterprise’ s (SMMt's) to the overall economy of the country.

Government and the private sector have introduced agencies and operations to support the development of SMME's. Given this support, SMME's continue to face serious challenges and barriers leading to failure, for example, finance, government policy and communication, marketing, infrastructure, limited use of technology, weak business management, training and skills development. To stem the tide of failure and offer support and solutions, the challenge was to develop a maturity model (PICaMM) which could support South African SMMKs in improving their business processes and improve their overall level of maturity as a developing organization. This paper will indicate how PICaMM can be applied by SMMes to measure and improve themselves. After PICaMM was applied in two SMMEs through a mixed methodology approach results indicated that PICaMM did support these SMMes to evaluate their level of maturity regarding the management of the workforce, new ideas, products and services, knowledge, skills and training. Maturity improvement within the SММE is evaluated along a ‘step-wise’ continuum of staged levels, one to five, where, at the fifth level the enterprise will be able to align its processes and activities with its business objectives lo become more successful and competitive in gaining market share.

Abstract

This research work examines official web sites of Nigerian universities in order to clarify the motivations for the creation of external hyperlinks. The proposed classification of motivations is applied to more than 6300 links from over 86 Nigerian universities’ sites. The existence of several potential motivations leads authors to modification of the classification scheme towards an integration of several motivations into just one, as well as to pooling the universities into regional groups. The application of statistical methods allows to get a more distinct view of motivations of external hyperlinks’ creation on universities’ web sites, and to give a number of recommendations for developers aimed at improvement of external links’ use.
